black lentil buns

Making a perfect Black Lentil Bun at home quietly changes how you think about everyday baking. We all look for that ideal bread alternative that tastes good and nourishes the body, tbh. You might wonder if a simple legume can actually transform into a soft, fluffy bun without hours of kneading. I remember experimenting with different ingredients, hoping to find something that felt light but held together perfectly.

It usually ended up a bit dense or crumbly in my early days. But sometimes, a simple ingredient swap brings a beautiful surprise to your kitchen. When you try this method, you get a gorgeous texture that holds your favorite sandwich fillings beautifully. You just blend the ingredients, shape them, and let the oven do all the hard work.

The house smells wonderful, and the whole process feels incredibly rewarding. While the original recipe features black lentils, swapping them out creates your own vibrant variation. Let me show you how simple this baking adventure actually is.

The Gentle Charm of the Black Lentil Bun

Store-bought gluten-free bread sometimes leaves us wanting more. When you bake these buns yourself, you know exactly what goes into your meal. I love how versatile they are for quiet mornings or busy lunches. You can slice them for a simple breakfast sandwich or serve them warm alongside a comforting soup.

Do you notice how some buns fall apart halfway through eating? These hold their shape wonderfully, giving you a perfect bite every single time.

The Secret to a Perfect, Soft Texture

You might ask how a lentil mixture turns into a soft bun. Psyllium husk acts as a natural binder here, absorbing moisture and giving the dough that essential flexibility. You really need this ingredient to help the buns rise properly.

Soaking the lentils also makes a huge difference. The soaking process softens them up, creating a much smoother paste when you blend everything together. It is a small step that yields a beautiful result.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Overnight Soaked Black Lentil
  • 1/2 Cup Roasted Black Sesame Seeds
  • 1/4 Cup Yoghurt
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 4 tbsp Psyllium Husk
  • 1/4 tspn Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tspn Salt
  • 1/2 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 tbsp White Sesame Seeds
  • 1-2 tbsp Water If Needed

Instructions

  • Wash and soak lentil overnight or for at least 4-5 hours.
  • Drain all the water then add it to a blender along with other ingredients.
  • Grind everything to make paste or coarsly if you like.
  • I only add water if needed because soaked lentils already have some water in them.
Too much water makes paste runny and with a runny paste the buns will puff up like tortillas on top.
  • Now make small balls then shape them to bun.
  • Place them into a baking tray with a parchment paper.
  • Brush with milk on top then sprinkle white and black sesame seeds.
  • Preheat the oven to 350F( 180C).
  • Bake for 30 mins or until golden on top.
  • For a visual reference you can watch our video linked below.
  • Remove from the oven and let them cool for 5-10 then Enjoy😋
  • You can easily store them in the fridge in a ziplock bag or airtight container for up to 7 days.
